Colposcopy
Colposcopy utilizes a magnification microscope to allow the examination of cervical and vaginal lesions. It enables Dr. Jao to further diagnose abnormalities indicated by a Pap smear through selective biopsy.
Most patients who undergo colposcopy will have a final diagnosis of either “mild to moderate dysplasia” or “normal” cervix. Mild to moderate dysplasia denotes early changes in the cells of the surface layer of the cervix, which may develop into cancer many years in the future.
A few patients will be diagnosed with carcinoma-in-situ, which is a little more advanced than severe dysplasia, but does not mean invasive cancer. However, it has a potential to develop into invasive cancer if left untreated.
